Lock in Your Love

Locks with the names of couples hang from links on the Széchenyi Bridge

A popular tradition for couples in recent years is to physically, and symbolically, “lock in” their love by attaching locks with their names or sentimental messages on them to monumental bridges. This practice began in Rome, became a prominent influence in Paris (specifically at the Pont des Arts bridge, before the locks had to be removed due to the damaging effects of the their weight) and has made its way to Budapest. The idea is to be able to secure the strength of the partners’ relationship by inscribing it in a seemingly permanent way; this is further by signified tossing the keys to the lock into the river. If you are visiting with a significant other, this might be a meaningful bonding experience to consider.
